Have a Green Christmas with Tips from MarketPlace Leichhardt

Christmas Tree

Tips for Children

  • Use recycled wrapping paper or brown paper to wrap your Christmas presents
  • Images on old Christmas cards make great gift tags or new Christmas cards (simply cut new cards from coloured cardboard and glue on your image)
  • After Christmas, keep all your wrapping and Christmas cards, they are great for kids craft
  • Get creative and make your own Christmas decorations from recycled material around the house
  • Create fun Christmas stencils using a sponge and piece of wood. Draw a star or Christmas bell. Trace the outline onto a kitchen sponge and cut around it. Glue the sponge onto a piece of wood and allow to dry. Use the stamp to create a range of colouring patterns and pictures with children’s paint. Children will be able to make some great Christmas artworks!

Tips for Mum and Dad

  • Take re-useable bags when doing your Christmas shopping
  • When buying Christmas gifts, look for products which are environmentally friendly with minimal packaging which can be recycled
  • Plan your food shop - this saves both time and the purchase of unnecessary items which end up going to waste
  • Don’t wrap bulky presents
  • If you purchase a live Christmas tree, have it mulched after Christmas. Tree chippings are great weed deterrents in the garden
